5 ways to optimize office layout for Millennials
If your company is similar to any of the most successful companies, its employees are young people, that is the so called Millennials. They have very specific needs and expectations when it comes to workspace. If your office design does not take these preferences into account, you may find it difficult to hire good employees.
Here are some tips on how to design an office that would be welcome by Generation Y :
Something exceptional. Something real
Your marketing department should love this way of designing office. Millennials want to spend time in space that is exceptional and related to the nature of the company they work for. Although it may seem that they are too busy to be interested in branding, they will certainly react to bad branding. If you find a way to create a unique theme for your business, it will be an incentive for them and not just a marketing trick.
Food and drinks
Kitchen and dining room may seem like a standard facility, but to really attract Millennials, this space needs to be properly integrated into the office. Young workers often work longer than standard working hours, but they expect to be well-fed and to have the best coffee.
Natural light and windows
Millennials love natural light. This means finding a well-lit office and choosing space design that will ensure even distribution of light across office space. Millennials also enjoy extensive views. This is another thing you can provide in the office to satisfy Generation Y and attract young people from Generations X and Baby Boomers.
Location with ‘wow’ effect
The claim that Millennials enjoy working in the center is oversimplification. They prefer to work in areas that provide good balance between work and fun with residential options within walking distance, a bike ride or a trip by public transport. Areas surrounding to the central business district in many cities may be more desirable to Millennials, but are rarely affordable.
Less personal space
Millennials need some space for themselves, which is why research shows that the typical open office layout harms productivity and has negative effects on the team. Young people do not need much space, because they realize that they probably will not spend too much time at their desk. They also know that their mobile devices, flat screens and cloud storage systems take up less space than in the past. Moreover, they do not see justification for a bigger office. In short, by giving promotion you do not necessarily need to offer more workspace.
